I’ve been itching to do this project for years now. We have a pretty small ranch and when you walk in, there is no place to put your coat. We all end up throwing them on chairs, railings, beds, floors…you name it. It really drove me crazy. I was in Lowes the other day and picked up hooks. I’ve looked on Pinterest and stuff to find really cool ones but let’s face it, they are going to be hidden. On top of that, I only have a few inches behind the door so having beautiful long hooks is out of the question anyways.
About an hour and a half ago, the space looked like this:
and now it looks like this:
Little Cubby helped me. He pretended to level and drill and stand on the step stool. Pretty cute!
I’m absolutely thrilled with the result. Practical and not bad looking either. I would love to get rid of that horrible door but it is not going to happen now. One day though.
Are there projects you’ve been wanting to do around the house? What are they? What kind of push do you need?
Nice job, ba-pe!
The good thing about those long hooks is that it will fit each person’s mittens, hat, scarf, and bookbag! In the summer when there are no coats you could hang the bathing suits and beach towels or just hang the flipflops and clogs. It is good to train them that each person has a ” locker” of sorts. Very good organizational technique. You should hang your summer bag. I just realized that if you hang shoes the wall will get scuffed so cancel that one. What you really should do is have you and craig hang your keys! We’ve done that for years and we have never had to search for our keys again! We hang them when we walk in, and we grab them as we walk out. It’s a beautiful thing! Also, for anyone who is also looking for an organizational system for their winter/summer stuff, you can buy a hanging shoe rack (the one that is made of fabric and lit looks like boxes) and put it on the back of a closet door. We use this for gloves, baseball caps, scarves, hats in winter and then we switch it over to all our summer flip flops and sandals. As long as you ” create a home” for everything, you will never lose stuff. You just have to train yourself to use the home. Take it out and then put it back in and you will never lose anything. That goes for anything else in your house. Make sure you tell your mate where the ” home” is. It should be agreeable to both of you and of course, always conveniently located. It is tried and true and I’ve been studying the art of organizing for 20 years. The proof in the pudding was one day when Samy said, ” wtf, why are the scissors NOT in their home?!”
